Ideas for holidays, weekends and trips in Cholet and its surroundings

Cholet is situated in the west of France in the Maine-et-Loire department. It owes its wealth to a settlement of weavers who arrived there led by Edouard Colbart, count of Maulevrier in the 1600s. The textile museum, Musée du Textile, houses the traditional machines that were used to construct the handkerchiefs that helped put the town on the map. You can learn about the techniques used, watch them being made and stroll through the beautiful gardens, which contain flowers used to dye the handkerchiefs. For history enthusiasts it is a must-see.

Cholet has witnessed several tragedies including the post revolution Vendée wars which culminated in the bloody Battle of Cholet. The history can be discovered at the museum of art and history. The town is home to several historic churches including the church of Notre Dame which was founded as part of a priory in the eleventh century by the monks of St Michel-en-l'Herm. Despite being a religious structure it was used as a stable and prison during the French revolution. After soaking in all the culture and history be sure to check out the stunning parks in the surrounding areas. Puy du Fou park is a primary European location for 'son et lumière' shows and one of the best parks in the world. It is just 30km from your Premiere Classe Cholet hotel and the Parc Oriental de Maulévrier, which is the biggest Japanese garden in Europe is even closer at just 20km away.
